Weak, dull tone and no clarity

Often the fault lies simply with old, tarnished strings and a dirty instrument. The real revolution in tone, however, comes from replacing the factory plastic in the nut and saddle with natural bone, which transmits resonance superbly. On electric guitars the height of the pickups is also crucial: fractions of a millimetre make an enormous difference to the frequency range and the attack.
